How it works

For inductance L in henries and current I in amperes, the tool computes the magnetic-field energy as E = ½L·I² joules.

Assumptions & limits

  • Models an ideal, linear inductor with constant inductance; it does not account for winding resistance, core loss or magnetic saturation.
  • Inductance and current must both be positive finite numbers.

FAQ

What happens to stored energy if current doubles?
With inductance unchanged, doubling current makes the energy four times as large because energy is proportional to I².
